How To Lose Weight With A Low Fat Diet

April 29, 2008

Before you start reading, discover the world’s top secret fat loss secret exposed - click here

Low fat diets became popular in the past 30 years or so, because it was believed that eating fatty foods would cause you to have heart disease and become fat. Like any diet which tries to go too far to one extreme though, this one has inherant problems of it’s own too.

Most people interpret “low fat” to mean “low meat consumption”. Some people in fact, tried to cut meat from their diets entirely. Now this is possible to do of course, and there are varying forms of vegetarianism which prove it can be done. Like other extreme eating styles though, cutting out all sources of meat and fat in our diets is quite difficult to do. And it’s not overly healthy for us either.

Different types of meat have different vitamins, minerals, and essential nutrients our bodies need to survive. And some of these nutrients cannot be gotten from any other type of food source.

The other problem with cutting out meats from our diet, or cutting down on them drastically, is that we must fill our stomachs some other way. And the only ways left are with carbohydrates or sugars. Now there is fiber of course, and that can be gotten with lots of fresh fruits and vegetables. And fiber helps a lot towards helping your body feel full after eating. Most people unfortunately, don’t eat enough fiber in their diets though.

So they try to fill their stomachs with carbohydrates which are quick fuels which aren’t designed to sustain us for long periods of time. So eating high carbohydrate meals often leads us to eating way too much food each day. We eat something at 8am and we’re hungry again at 9 or 10. And if the stuff we’re eating is simple carbs with lots of sugar in them, then we’re simply packing on more fat as we go throughout each day.

This is the primary reason most people are miserable on low fat diets. The diets call for a certain amount of calories each day, but eating those calories with primarily carbohydrates leaves us feeling hungry and deprived. In order to eat enough to feel full and satisfied, we’re tripling the amount of calories we should be eating. Sometimes we’re even consuming five times or more than the daily amount that’s appropriate for us.

Like carbohydrates though, there are both good and bad sources of dietary fat. By adding good sources of fat into our daily eating habits, we’re able to keep the worst of our hunger at bay, and add longer term sources of energy and fuel for our bodies too.

Omega-3 Fatty acids is one source of fat that should be included in everyone’s daily eating plans. These come from fish primarily, but they can be gotten from supplements too. There are also saturated fats and unsaturated fats. Then there are trans fats as well. Trans fats and saturated fats are very bad for you, and should be kept to a bare minimum if you can’t cut them out completely. Unsaturated fats though, are essential for the proper health and nutritional balance in our bodies, and these will also contribute to your weight loss goals too, because they help you to eat less.

Eating high quality fats in some form of protein is the best dietary choice though, because the protein also helps your body maintain it’s energy levels longer, keeps you from getting hungry too soon, and helps your body build stronger muscles and bones too. And all of these are essential to maintaining a healthy body weight.

Detoxifying and Cleansing Your Body

April 26, 2008

Discover How You Can Start The Master Cleanse - Avoid The Side Effects - And In 10 Days Be Lighter, Healthier, Younger Looking, and More Energetic - Click Here

Many herbalists and herbal remedy specialists feel that most modern day diseases, severe illnesses, and chronic health conditions are caused by things being wrong inside your body. Many years of eating junk food, ready made meals with preservatives and other chemicals, not getting enough vitamins and minerals and so on has caused a build up of bad stuff inside your body. An equivalent scenario would be to imagine the way dirt might build up in a house that isn’t cleaned for twenty, thirty, or forty years.

Because of this, a lot of herbal and alternative remedies designed to help with specific conditions won’t always seem to have anything to do with the specific condition at all. This is because instead of treating the symptoms of a condition, herbalists believe you should treat the underlying cause of that condition instead.

An excellent example is a type of skin disease known as psoriasis. Psoriasis is caused by your body’s immune system over reacting to some stimulus, and it’s pushing new skin cells to the surface at a much faster rate than normal. Usually new skin cells rise to the surface in about thirty days, but people who suffer from psoriasis get new skin cells pushed to the surface every 3-5 days instead. This creates a pile up on the surface of the skin, which results in thick, scaly, flaky sore like spots in various places on the body. The most common places to see psoriasis scales is on the elbows, knees and scalp, but they can occur on the feet, hands, ankles, or even all over your skin too.

Now, modern day medicine feels there is no cure for psoriasis, so treatments tend to revolve around trying to minimize the scaly skin build up. In fact, some treatments actually try to supress the bodies own immune system in order to “solve” the problem. But from an herbalist point of view, this can only lead to further problems.

When your body’s normal waste removal systems are clogged up or stagnated, it can cause those toxins to leak back into your blood stream and create havoc for all the organs. This creates a variety of diseases, conditions and symptoms because your body becomes desparate to clean out the toxins and waste that’s polluting it. So if it cannot get rid of things the normal way - through elimination via the colon - one of the next things it trys to do is get rid of the toxins through your skin.

This is just a simple summary of some of the major problems that can occur from your body being overly toxic. But it’s a nice introduction to the issue, and one you’ll need to be aware of as you proceed with your own personal herbal remedy learning. As you come across alternative and herbal remedies in books, online, or via other people, you will often hear people talking about needing to detox or cleanse the body. And sometimes this will start happening naturally for some people as they start using herbs to treat various illnesses, vitamin deficiencies, and other health problems they may have.

Detoxifying your body is often done with the use of enemas, because these help you quickly flush out any stagnant waste within your colon. Diet and fasting can be used to detoxify as well though, and there are many herbs which help with this process too. So we’ll talk about the various ways to detoxify and cleanse in more detail with later blog posts. Subscribe on the right hand side if you have not done so already to be updated when new blog posts are published.

Liver Health Overview

April 23, 2008

The health of your liver is one of the most important goals everyone should have. When your liver is damaged, not functioning properly, or diseased, it causes a wide variety of other health problems to crop up within your body.

The liver is one of the primary filtering organs within your body. It’s job is to filter toxins, bacteria, wastes and other harmful substances from your body and send it off for disposal. When the liver is diseased or damaged, it’s not able to filter toxins from your system at optimal rates. And when toxins stay around in your body, they become poisons which cause major health problems.

There are many health problems which are thought to be caused by a damaged or badly functioning liver. Some of these can be as simple as bad breath or acne, while others are more problematic. Diabetes, hepatitis, psoriasis  and more can all be traced back to problems with the health of your liver.

Modern doctors and scientists don’t believe most liver problems can be cured, though there are vacines for specific types of liver problems. For the most part though, they attempt to treat the symptoms caused by liver problems instead of treating the liver itself. When someone has psoriasis for instance, doctors usually treat the skin eruptions only. With more serious diseases such as hepatitis, strong drugs are used. Often, surgeryes are performed to try and create artificial waste filtering and disposal systems instead.

The liver filters blood, and makes bile which carries out fats and fatty substances from your body. The liver also processes fats, sugars, cholesterol, and makes important proteins which are used to help your body with proper blood clotting.

The liver also processes and metabolizes drugs and medications, stores important minerals such as iron, copper and various vitamins, plus it helps regulate fluid transfer from the blood and kidneys.

As you can see, the liver is critical to the health, life, and proper functionality of our bodies. When it becomes diseased, or simply stops working as well as it’s supposed to, a wide variety of health problems can occur.

The most common kind of liver damage is caused by malnutrition. This problem is increased by excessive alcohol consumption. One way to help prevent serious liver damage, diseases and problems is to limit your alcohol consumption of course, and another way is to be sure you’re getting adequate nutrition from the foods you eat or the supplements you take.

Stress: An Overview

April 16, 2008

Stress – the final frontier.  The final health frontier, that is!  Stress is unavoidable. It goes by many different names: tension, apprehension, anxiety, or that “uptight” feeling.  Whatever you call it, it’s a “built in” response that has been with us since the days of the cave men.

Medically, stress is the presence of either emotional or physical tension. Each of us has a different set of triggers for emotional stress.  Meeting a deadline at work may trigger tension in one person; speaking before a group of people may trigger an emotional response in another.

Even though stress is many times an emotional response, it produces very real physical symptoms in your body.  Your body responds to the situation as if it were in danger.  Your heart rate speeds up and you breathe faster.  This gives your body a burst of energy known in medical circles as “the fight-or-flight” syndrome. Other symptoms that your body is responding to stress include increased sweating and a sudden rush of strength.  Lesser symptoms include dilated pupils and a slowed digestive system.

Stress is a normal – and even a very useful – tool.  The increased energy your body generates when it’s under stress can be exactly what you need to meet that deadline or to heighten that reaction time under demanding circumstance.

However, stress can be harmful if your body is exposed to it too often, or for too long of a period.  Prolonged exposure to these situations can not only cause headaches, an upset stomach, and back pain – it can even disturb your sleep.

And that’s just the short-term effects.  Longer lasting effects on your body include a weakened immune system which makes it more difficult to fight off a cold or other health problems.  If you already suffer from a health condition, additional stress can worsen it.

Emotionally speaking, stress can also have detrimental effects.  If you’re under a great deal of tension, you may also find that you’re moodier than usual – with the smallest of problems setting you off – more tense than usual and you may even experience depression.

But the good news is that stress is manageable – and it’s relatively easy to control.  First, you need to identify exactly what it is that’s causing the stress in your life.  Are there work-related or school-related activities that are triggering your anxiety, financial problems at home, or are you distressed about a personal problem or a relationship?

Once you identify the stressors, then you can create a plan of dealing more effectively with them.  If you can’t change the situation, then you’ll have to discover more effective ways to cope with it.  If it’s a lifestyle that is over-scheduled with events, then you’ll want to look at ways of “unscheduling” some events.

Next, you may want to look at some stress management techniques.  The medical establishment now recognizes several methods for dealing with anxiety, including meditation and yoga.  Keep in mind that stress management has no “one-size-fits-all” cure. What works for your neighbor may be ineffective for you.  You may need to try out several solutions until you find one that helps.  Just keep searching for a solution that suits your needs, you’ll find one.

Minerals: Calcium

April 13, 2008

Most people know that calcium is essential to building strong bones and teeth. What they don’t know is that there is more calcium inside our body than any other mineral, and that almost all of it within us is in the teeth and bone areas.

There are many things about calcium that most people don’t know though. Calcium is a natural tranquilizer that will help you sleep for instance, and this is why some people drink warm milk before bed.

Calcium also helps the metabolism work properly though, and it is essential to the muscles functioning properly in your body too. In fact, getting extra calcium will help relieve muscle cramps and charlie horses.

Calcium needs to have enough vitamin D in the body to be absorbed and used though, and calcium is absorbed less as you get older.

Calcium loss is slowed down by exercise though, which is why people with osteoperosis and other bone related diseases are told to get more exercise.

Emotional stress can actually cause your body to lose calcium quickly though, because the stress simply flushes it out of your system.

Calcium is actually an excellent pain killer too though. It has been used in conjunction with Vitamin D to relieve dental pain for instance, and it’s been used in injection form for treating pleurisy.

Calcium will help relieve headaches, muscle pains, and menstrual cramps too. It also helps relieve stress, and it helps you sleep at night too so it’s excellent to use for insomnia.

Calcium also helps lower cholesterol and triglyceride levels, regulates the heart beat, and helps the body’s proper blood clotting functions.

If that weren’t enough, calcium also helps the body aborb and use Iron, it helps the functionality of Vitamin C, it helps prevent skin problems, and it can help reduce some of the signs of aging.

If your body doesn’t get enough Calcium, or it’s not being utilized properly, some of the signs can include insomnia, poor growth, growing pains, teeth and gum problems, weak muscles, painful joints and arthritis, and muscle cramps.

You can get calcium into your body naturally by eating foods such as cheese, soybeans, sardines and salmon, peanuts and walnuts, sunflower seeds, green vegetables, and various milk products.

There are also herbs which are high in calcium naturally, and these can be taken as a daily supplement if needed. Some of the best herbs for calcium include Alfalfa, Black Walnut, Capsicum (Cayenne), Camomile, Dandelion, Fennel, Garlic, Ginger, Kelp, Parsley, Rosemary, and Sage.

Meditation: An Overview

“Dive Into A Deep, Relaxed State In 5 Minutes FLAT, Eliminate Stress, Increase Your Energy, And Wipe Out All Of Your Problems - As If They Never Existed” Click Here To Find Out How

It’s associated with Eastern monks living like hermits in caves. Even Christian saints are renowned for their ability in this area. What is it?

Meditation. In its simplest form it is the practice of calming your body and mind to perform inner contemplation. The classic Eastern practice of this has you sitting with your spine straight, legs crossed and forefinger and thumb together as you release the sound of “ohm.” But many people simply assume a comfortable pose and then clear their minds.

The variations are numerous: some people focus on an external object, such as a candle. Others find that they can clear their minds easier by concentrating on their breathing. Some even silently repeat a word or a phrase.

One student of meditation has described it as “inner astronomy.” Through meditation you discover the stars, the moon and the sun . . . all within you. Most closely associated with advanced spiritual development, Eastern medicine has claimed that meditation can help a person improve his physical health as well.

For many years conventional Western medicine paid scant attention to meditation and even less to its “allegedly” benefits. But recently, studies have shown that meditation can indeed have immense health benefits. Meditation is an example of how the body and mind can work together in order to generate a state of well-being.

Meditation can be an effective adjunct to conventional medical treatment. By calming the mind, many individuals have experienced remarkable improvements in such health conditions as blood pressure and other cardiovascular problems, depression, anxiety, and stress. Many have even reported that chronic pain lessens when they meditate regularly and their problems with insomnia have decreased.

But more than that, studies have shown that even AIDS patients and those suffering with cancer benefit from practicing meditation. Some doctors have even noted that continued meditation may even help those addicted to drugs and alcohol.

The exact mechanisms by which meditation work are not fully known as of yet, according to the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM). Currently, the National Institutes of Health are sponsoring several studies to discover more in depth knowledge about the effects of meditation, how it works and for what health conditions it would be most beneficial.

Researchers do know that meditation produces changes in the body’s autonomic nervous system which then alters your body’s “fight or flight” response – which dictates how you body responds to stress as well as how your organs, and muscles perform.

One of the best aspects of meditation is that – unlike harsh prescription medicines given for depression or for heart-related conditions – it is free of side effects.

An Introduction To Minerals & Their Health Benefits

April 11, 2008

Minerals are very much like vitamins: They are essential for the proper functioning and health of the human body. Vitamins need to be replaced regularly though, where as minerals stay in our body and make up the actual structure of the body too.

Minerals “turn over” though, meaning a little of them must be replaced or renewed continuously in order for us to stay healthy.

Minerals are essential for our bodies to activate, assimilate, and use vitamins properly though. Minerals are absorbed by plants through the soil, and animals and humans get the minerals from those plants. There are many essential minerals we know about, can identify, and know what their importance is. There are also trace minerals though, which are found in plant life too, and these are also needed by our bodies even though scientists don’t have much information on them yet.

In most cases, vitamins and minerals work together within our body. Calcium and Vitamin D are excellent examples, because the body needs enough Vitamin D to be able to absorb and use calcium.

Chelated (key lated) minerals are required for our bodies to be able to use them. Chelation happens when a mineral is wrapped in molecules of protein, and chelation is needed in order for the blood stream to accept the minerals. If a mineral is not chelated, then both it and the vitamins associated with it will pass through the body without providing any benefit.

This is one of the reasons it’s usually suggested that you take a vitamin or mineral with a meal. Because the proteins from your meal will help your body chelate the minerals and absorb and use them properly, along with the vitamins too.

Before the body can chelate a mineral though, it must dissolve it first. Once it has dissolved  the mineral, it then uses protein to chelate it for proper use. Now, if you don’t eat enough protein of course, you’re going to have a problem utilizing both minerals and vitamins in your body. And if you take vitamin supplements, they may be in a form which is difficult for your body to dissolve properly, which of course would make them unusuable as well.

These are reasons to use natural herbal supplements for adding vitamin and mineral content. Herbal sources contain high amounts of both vitmains and minerals, including the trace minerals too. Herbal supplements are often purchased in crushed or powdered form too, so these are much easier for the body to readily dissolve and put to use within us.
