Everyone knows that superfoods possess a multitude of health benefits. And we all know that we should be eating them, but am I the only one bored of the “regular” superfoods?

You know the one’s that get all the attention and that we are constantly encouraged to consume. Things like blueberries, broccoli, oranges, spinach, and pretty much any other fruit or vegetable you can name.

It’s about time we had some variety and so this blog post will reveal three superfoods you probably won’t find in your local grocery store but should be eating.

Unknown Superfood #1
Manuka Honey

“Regular” honey has been used for thousands of years for a variety of natural treatments – but more recently the discovery of Manuka Honey in New Zealand has lead to the regular stuff taking a back seat.

Professor Molan is regarded as the worlds leading authority on medicinal honeys and he has identified that the Manuka variety has a naturally occuring active ingredient that makes it distinctive from other honeys.

Proffessor Molan says he cannot be sure what this ingredient is but that it is stable and maintains its potency even when exposed to heat, light or dilution. This is referred to as UMF (Unique Manuka Factor) and a higher value means the more potent the honey.

A UMF of 10+ is suggested for the best antiviral and antibacterial effects.

Amazon sells a Manuka Honey with a UMF of 16+. It’s a little expensive ($30) but it’s definitely worthwhile having a pot – plus, it doesn’t “go off” for a very long time.

Unknown Superfood #2
Goji Berries

Okay, you probably have heard of this one – but are you regularly consuming goji berries?

If not, you definitely should be!

Here’s why…

In the Tibetan regions of the Himalayas, a large proportion of the population lives past 100. Much of the reason for this incredible longevity is due to the immense health benefits of goji berries.

Researchers, scientists and the media have referred to the goji berry as “the worlds greatest anti aging food“. It has one of the highest concentrations of antioxidants of any food on the planet which helps to significantly slow down the oxidative damage exerted on our cells.

You can sometimes find goji berries in grocery stores, but be sure to stay clear of “goji berry extract” (it has only a tiny fraction of the health benefits of the berries).

If you can’t find goji berries in the real world, then head to Amazon. They have some great quality berries just like this one.

Unknown Superfood #3
Prickly Pear Cactus

prickly pear cactus benefits

Prickly pear cacus grows wild in desert conditions and has been used for centuries by Mexican tribes.

Recent research has identified the true extent of the benefits of prickly pear cactus. It is, like goji berries, a rich source of antioxidants which enables it to fight free radicals and reduce oxidative stress and therefore the process of aging. This helps to strengthen the immune system and reduce the likelihood of illnesses and disease.

On top of this, prickly pear cactus lowers LDL cholestrol, reduces high blood pressure and minimizes the stress placed on the heart.

If you can’t locate this fruit in your local grocery store, you can buy 10 fresh cactus pears on Amazon for just over $20.

Some people have been found to be allergic to prickly pear cactus so consult your doctor or a physician before consumption.
