My recent new found love for essential oils has resulted in a lot of blog posts in the past few months about using nature’s fragrant oils. Most of the posts however have focused on using essential oils for our own health and beauty.

Today I want to reveal how you can use essential oils to live more naturally and reduce the number of toxic chemicals we use in our homes.

Freshen The Air

Commercially bought air fresheners are packed with chemicals. One of the easiest ways to make your home more green is to ditch these products and opt for natural essential oils instead. There are a number of ways you can freshen the air, including…

– Add four drops of essential oil to one cup of water in a spray bottle and spray around the room.

– If you are lucky enough to have a wood fire then add one drop of essential oil to each log prior to burning.

– Add a couple of drops of essential oil to a diffuser, such as this one, and the scent will be diffused around the room.

– Burn a candle for a few minutes and then add two drops of essential oil to the melted wax near the wick.

The great thing about using essential oils in this way is that you can regularly change the scent depending on what mood you are trying to achieve. For example, for an uplifting scent try grapefruit, basil or rosemary and for a relaxing scent try geranium, lemon or bergamot.

Super Simple Kitchen Surface Wipes

Surface cleaning sprays are another product that are unnecessarily laden with chemicals. Reduce your toxic load, and save a fortune, with this super simple essential oil surface wipe.

Either add one drop of essential oil directly onto a cloth or seven drops in the rinse water and wipe down your surfaces.

Oils such as eucalyptus, pine, lavender, cypress, lemon, lime, grapefruit, lemongrass and thyme would work perfectly.

Make Windows Sparkle

Here’s a neat little trick to use essential oils to make your windows sparkle, and to save you money on glass cleaning sprays.

Add one drop of lime, lemon or grapefruit essential oil onto a piece of scrunched up newspaper and scrub the window. The essential oil will soak in and combine with the print to give a sparkling finish – plus the scent will freshen your home!

Freshen Your Clothes

Clothes that sit for months on end in dark, and sometimes damp, closets can start to smell so placing a few drops of your favorite essential oil on cotton wool balls and stashing them in the corners of your closets will keep them smelling fresh.

If moths are a problem then use oils such as lavender, lemongrass, rosemary and citronella to keep them away.

Keep Insects Away

If creepy-crawlies regularly invade your home then whip out your essential oils and help keep them at bay.

To stop insects flying in through open windows, hang some ribbon with a drop of citronella or lemongrass oil and if ants or spiders are invading then place a drop of neat peppermint oil at their likely entry sources.

If you want to expose your family to fewer toxic chemicals, if you want to create a more natural home, and if you want to save money in the process, then try these five simple cheats using essential oils.

If you don’t yet own any essential oils, then you can buy individual oils here on Amazon, or you can try this 32 Bottle Ultimate Aromatherapy Essential Oil which contains pretty much everything you need to get started.
