Top 7 Natural Beauty Treatments From Around The World

Here are seven splendid ideas from all around the world on how to give yourself some inexpensive and natural beauty treatments.

Natural nourishment for hair

Ancient Chinese practitioners used this method for looking after and retaining their hair. Five thousand years later, you can do the same by using ginseng root (which is available from Asian specialty shops, health stores or this page on Mountain Rose Herbs) and steeping slices of the root in a glass teapot or Pyrex jug of boiling water for an hour. Rinse washed hair in the brew for a vitamin-rich and effective anti-aging nourishment for the hair plus a treatment against hair loss.

Natural coffee body scrub

Many Russian women use wet coffee grounds as a body scrub, making the ideal gentle exfoliant because they are not too abrasive.  In addition, caffeine (when used externally) works as a natural stimulant to break down fatty deposits that lead to cellulite.  Massaged into moist skin, coffee grinds will get rid of those flaky, dry layers to leave the skin softer.

Natural soother for the feet

In Bali, the local women cover the base of a large bowl with smooth stones before topping up with warm water and a few drops of jasmine oil or eucalyptus oil and some tropical flowers.  They give their feet a lovely, long soak to relax the muscles, joints and tendons.  While the oil is a natural pain reliever, the warmth of the water brings blood flow to the feet and the smooth stones gently massage them.

Nut oils hydration for the skin

Brazil is the source of many wonderful nuts and seeds and of course their oils. Our legs could do with some TLC especially if we shave or wax them and using a nut oil will hydrate and smooth the skin, promote healing and restore any moisture that has been lost.  Warm the oil before applying directly to the skin or allow the oil to cool to a thicker consistency first.

Tea-tree oil skin cleanser

Originating from Australia, tea-tree oil is widely known for its natural healing properties.  Use just a drop to dab on a pimple where its antibiotic component will go to work.  Tea tree oil is a natural astringent, effective in clearing clogged pores and soothing any puffiness.

A rice mask to purify the skin

Rice is used by some Asian women to deep-cleanse their skin while getting rid of unwanted oil.  They do this by soaking a cup of rice in warm water for just 30 minutes so that the starch rises to the surface.  Then they make a paste by blending the water with some rice flour before applying to the skin and leaving for 10 minutes.  After absorbing excess oil and exfoliating and lightening the skin, the mask is then removed with cool water.

Rose geranium skin toner

These flowers come from the floral kingdom of South Africa and are renowned for reducing inflammation and healing wounds.  You can use 4 to 5 drops of rose geranium essential oil or you can make your own brew by placing some rose geranium flowers, leaves and stems in a pot of boiling water for 5 minutes, and allowing to cool before using as a toner.  Alternatively, while the brew is still very hot, place a towel over your head, close your eyes and lean over the bowl to inhale the vapor for a few therapeutic minutes before rinsing your face several times with the cooled water.

Take care of your hair and skin with these seven suggestions for a younger, more nourished you.

Spice Up This Fall With These Exciting Essential Oil Ideas

Spice Up This Fall With These Essential Oils

New here? Like RevitaliseYourHealth on Facebook to stay up to date with new posts and win prizes in our fun, games, competitions and giveaways.

September is in full swing. The nights are drawing in, the mornings are crisp and the leaves will soon be changing colour and falling.

I love Fall. I love warm hearty food, I love wrapping up warm and snuggling up on the sofa, and I absolutely love the spicy and woody scents of Fall essential oils, such as nutmeg, pine and cypress oil.

Essential oils really can be used to make Fall an even more magical time of year and in this blog post I’ll reveal how.

Make Your Home Smell Like Fall

You can create a fantastic Fall ambience in your home using certain essential oils. If you are lucky enough to have a log fire, then add a drop of either pine, cypress, sandalwood or cedarwood essential oil onto each log before you throw it onto the flames. Your home will be transformed into a Fall smelling forest as the scent diffuses through each room.

Make Your Home Smell Like FallIf you don’t have a log fire, then you can purchase an essential oil diffuser, such as this one, simply add your essential oils and let it disperse the scents around your room.

Making your own essential oil candles is another great way to put the scent of Fall into your home. If you know how to make candles then you simply need to add 30-60 drops of essential oil of your choice to each eight ounces of candle wax used. Making your own candles is fun and it’s great to create your own scents, so if you’d like to learn how then get yourself a copy of The Candlemaker’s Companion on Amazon.

If you don’t know how to make your own candles then here is a little trick you can use. Light a regular candle and allow to burn for a few minutes until a pool of melted wax forms. Then simply add three drops of Fall essential oils of your choice.

Here are some oils you might like to try: Allspice, bay, black pepper, cardamom, cedarwood, cinnamon, clove, cumin, frankincense, ginger, myrhh, nutmeg, pine, sage, sandalwood and vanilla.

All of these oils can be purchased on the Essential Oils page at Mountain Rose Herbs. Simply click that link and scroll down to see all the essential oils on offer.

Keep Cold & Flu At Bay

Keep Cold & Flu At BayOne of the main downsides of Fall is the inevitable cold and flu that arrives as the temperatures fall. Luckily, essential oils can be used to prevent – or treat – cold and flu should it strike us down.

One way to prevent cold and flu is by burning an essential oil in an aroma lamp, such as this one. An aroma lamp consists of a tea light which warms a bowl of water above it. Add an essential oil to the water and inhale the mist to kill germs and bacteria in your nasal cavity. Essential oils that are particularly good for this are eucalyptus, lavender and rosemary.

If the flu germs have invaded and you are experiencing a sore throat, then gargle with a mixture of one drop essential oil and water. Tea tree oil, eucalyptus and ginger are particularly effective.

Finally, if the flu is in full swing and you are experiencing fever, then bathe in a warm bath with a few drops of essential oil, especially chamomile, black pepper, ginger, peppermint or lemon essential oil.

Essential Oils For Halloween

One of the best parts of Fall are the Halloween celebrations – and essential oils can be used to make October 31st even better.

Here are a couple of ideas from my favorite book about essential oils, The Complete Book Of Essential Oils & Aromatherapy.

Get yourself some charcoal (such as this incense charcoal on Mountain Rose Herbs), place it in a heat resistant dish and light it. When it starts to burn add two or three drops of patchouli or cedarwood oil onto it. Aromatic smoke will billow out providing a fantastic show for the little ones.

Finally, another cool Halloween idea is to tie twigs into bundles, soak them in a strong woody fragrance, such as pine or cypress, diluted in water. These make fragrant witches brooms which make great gifts or can be used by the kids as part of their costumes.

Hearty Fall Soups With Essential Oils

soupHearty, warm and comforting soups are a staple of a Fall diet. Did you know that some essential oils can be used in food? There is a lot of conflicting information, but this recipe is taken from Valerie Ann Worwood – who is one of the world’s most trusted authorities on essential oils having authored The Complete Book Of Essential Oils & Aromatherapy.

Mandarin and Carrot Soup Recipe

- 1 pound carrots, grated
- 1 large potato, grated
- 1 small onion, chopped
- 1 ounce butter
- 2 ½ cups vegetable stock
- salt and pepper
- 4 drops mandarin essential oil

Melt the butter over a low heat, add the veg and seasonings and gently heat for ten minutes covered. Add the stock and bring to the boil. Add the mandarin essential oil, reduce to a simmer for ten minutes, sieve and return to heat. Serve when thoroughly hot.

For more food recipes that include essential oils, get yourself a copy of The Complete Book Of Essential Oils & Aromatherapy.

Fall is a wonderful time of year made all the better by the beautiful Fall essential oils. Try the above ideas for yourself and make this Fall your most magical yet!

Where To Buy Essential Oils

If you’d like to try these ideas, but you aren’t sure where to purchase essential oils, then here is a brief overview of where you can find them.

There are two main places. My new favorite place is from this page at Mountain Rose Herbs. Simply click that link, scroll down a little and you can see all of the essential oils they offer in alphabetical order. The products are guaranteed quality and very reasonably priced.

Secondly, Amazon have a good selection of oils from a variety of different brands. I personally recommend Eden’s Garden Essential Oils which you can see by clicking the link. Perform searches in the Amazon search box to find individual essential oils.

I hope you’ve enjoyed this post and it’s given you some exciting ways to spruce up Fall this year. Leave a comment below sharing what you thought of these ideas, and also please share your favorite Fall essential oils.

Top 7 Uses For Citronella Oil

Top 7 Uses For Citronella Oil

New here? Like RevitaliseYourHealth on Facebook to stay up to date with new posts and win prizes in our fun, games, competitions and giveaways.

Citronella essential oil is extracted from the leaves and stems of different species of lemongrass. The oil is used extensively in soap, candles, perfumes and other cosmetic properties.

Citronella oil is usually a clear light yellow to brownish colour and has a lemon citrus aroma with subtle woody tones.

If you don’t yet own a bottle, then pick up a bottle of citronella oil here and find out seven wonderful things you can do with this magical oil…

Insect Repellent

Citronella oil is perhaps most famed for its insect repellent properties. It can be used in isolation or combined with other essential oils (such as lemongrass oil) to create an even more potent insect repellent blend.

To keep insects away from your home light a candle, allow to burn for a few minutes so a pool of melted wax forms, and then add one or two drops of citronella oil. Alternatively add a drop or two to ribbon and hang by open windows or add a few drops to a cotton ball and place on window sills.

If you are moving around and want to be protected then add a few drops of citronella oil and mix with distilled water in a spray bottle and spray in the surrounding area. Alternatively, mix citronella oil with a carrier oil (such as olive or jojoba oil) and rub into the skin.

Skin Care

Citronella oil is effective for reducing oily skin and its anti-bacterial properties help it to fight bacteria that can cause acne. Adding just one drop to water and rinsing the face with the mix is one way to take advantage of this oil. A highly effective acne treatment involves mixing witch hazel and citronella at a one drop per ounce of witch hazel ratio and applying to the face. The astringent properties of the mixture will dry, harden and protect your skin.

Fever

Citronella oil has been used historically to eliminate the cause while also bringing down high fevers. A few drops diffused around the room provides a calming scent which also induces a fresh happy feeling and hope.

Additionally, mix two drops of the oil with a carrier oil and massage onto the stomach, arms and legs.

Deodorant

The lemony citrus aroma of citronella oil make it a wonderful smelling deodorant. Plus, the anti-bacterial properties help to kill potentially foul smelling bacteria. Mix a few drops of citronella oil with coconut oil for an effective, cheap and all-natural deodorant.

Alternatively, add a few drops to your evening bath for an odor killing soak.

Toxin Removal

Citronella oil has diaphoretic and diuretic properties which promotes toxin removal, weight loss and the disposal of waste substances. The diaphoretic properties stimulate sweating which expels toxins, excess water, fat and salts from the body and the diuretic properties increase the frequency and quantity of urination clears out toxins, waste substances and drains out infections in the urinary system.

Digestive Issues

Citronella oil has been identified as an effective natural treatment for worms. It should be administered in very mild doses to children and helps to eliminate round worms and tape worms which can hinder physical and mental growth.

Citronella oil also tones up digestion, excretion and fortifies the body.

Nuisance Dog Barking

According to research published in the Journal of the American Animal Hospital Association a spritz of citronella spray from an anti-barking collar was more effective and reported as more humane when it comes to preventing nuisance dog barking than an electric shock collar.

The veterinarians speculated that “given the dog’s sense of smell, it could be that a strange odor may be less tolerated than a presumably painful stimulus“.

If you need to calm a nuisance-barking dog, then try this Petsafe Gentle Spray Citronella Anti-Bark Dog Collar for a more natural and humane anti-nuisance barking treatment.

Where To Buy Citronella Oil

Citronella oil is one of the cheapest essential oils which is great if you want to start using it!

I use Edens Garden Citronella Oil which is available here on Amazon for just $5.65 for a 30ml bottle (that’s a big bottle!) Alternatively you can get a 10ml bottle for $2.95 here.

Alternatively, another fantastic supplier of essential oils is Mountain Rose Herbs. You can buy their citronella oil at this page (just scroll down a little – it’s in alphabetical order).

Pick up a bottle of citronella oil for yourself and try it out for all of the wonderful things it can do for you.

Argan Oil: The Magical Health & Beauty Benefits Of Morocco’s Miracle Oil

Argan Oil: The Magical Health & Beauty Benefits Of Morocco’s Miracle Oil

New here? Like RevitaliseYourHealth on Facebook to stay up to date with new posts and win prizes in our fun, games, competitions and giveaways.

In Morocco, Argan oil is most commonly used for dipping bread or drizzling over salads, but in the rest of the world it is quickly developing a reputation for being an incredible ingredient for our health and beauty.

Argan oil is pressed from the kernels of the Argan tree – a tree referred to by many Moroccan’s as the “tree of life” – and is one of the most expensive and rarest oils in the world.

But what can Morocco’s golden oil really do for our health and beauty? This blog post finds out…

Argan Oil For Health

A number of properties of Argan oil make it an effective oil for preventing cancer cell formation.

Carotenoids present in Argan oil are fat-soluble pigments which protect the skin from UV radiation and free radical damage, they protect the immune system and help to inhibit the growth of cancer cells. Polyphenols found in Argan oil repair DNA damage caused by toxic exposures and help to detoxify carcinogens. And research suggests that vitamin E helps to prevent some cancers by protecting cells and DNA from damage, reducing tumor growth and preventing precancerous substances from being converted to carcinogens.

A study conducted in 2005 found that a diet rich in Argan oil (compared with animal fats – butter) led to reduced levels of harmful cholesterol and triglycerides in the blood.

Argan Oil For Beauty

Skin

Argan oil is incredibly rich in phytosterols – a compound which has been found to not only stop the slow-down of collagen production but often stimulate new production making Argan oil one of the most powerful anti-aging oils in the world. These plant sterols also reduce inflammation, improve skin metabolism and promote moisture retention.

Substances called triterpenoids which are present in Argan oil are capable of healing scar tissue (making Argan oil an effective stretch mark reducer), have sun-protective, anti-inflammatory and disinfectant properties.

Research suggests (although further study is needed) that Argan oil is effective for slowing down the signs of aging – particularly due to the high levels of vitamin E. The antioxidant properties of vitamin E help to neutralise free radical damage and saponins help to soften the skin. Argan oil also reportedly helps to reduce wrinkles by restoring the skin’s hydro-lipid layer.

Applied topically, Argan oil has been identified at being an effective treatment for acne, eczema, rosacea, psoriasis, sun burnt skin and stretch marks.

Hair

Argan oil is rich in omega-3 and omega-9 fatty acids which penetrate the hair shaft when applied to the hair. This enables it to deliver nutrients directly to the hair while repairing damaged follicles to promote healthy hair growth.

Split ends can be combated simply by rubbing Argan oil onto them, your scalp can stay moisturized and healthy by simply massaging Argan oil into it, and you can reduce frizz by adding a few drops of Argan oil to your brush or comb and running it through your hair.

Nails

Argan oil moisturizes, strengthens and protects nails. It can nourish and repair dry and brittle nails by providing it with the vitamins and minerals it needs. For an effective Argan oil nail treatment, mix Argan oil and lemon juice together and soak your nails for fifteen minutes. Repeat this treatment weekly to restore your nails to their former glory.

Where To Buy Argan Oil

Argan oil is one of the world’s miracle oils. Not only does it possess incredible health and beauty benefits, but it also provides economic opportunity for the poverty-stricken Berber women of south-west Morocco.

If you decide you want to try Argan oil, then here are a few options for you.

Argan Oil from Mountain Rose Herbs – Mountain Rose Herbs only provide pure, chemical free products and so you can be sure you are getting a quality Argan oil here.

Body oils are relaxing, soothing and luxurious – but store bought body oils can also be very expensive!

This is surprising when you think just how simple it is to make your own at home. All you need are some carrier oils (such as jojoba, olive, sweet almond, apricot kernel, avocado or grapeseed oil) and some essential oils for fragrance and their healing and nourishing properties.

So save yourself some money, reduce the toxic load on your skin and have some fun making these seven wonderful luxurious face and body oils.

Crunchy Betty’s Refreshingly Minty Body Oil

Leslie, from CrunchyBetty.com, shares some fantastic homemade body oils on this page, but the minty body oil really stands out for me.

Here’s the recipe…

- 1 cup grapeseed oil
- 35 drops peppermint oil
- 15 drops lemongrass oil
- ¼ tsp liquid vitamin E

Combine all ingredients in a small glass bottle and shake well. For decorative purposes, add a sprig of peppermint or a strip of lemon rind.

Simple Lavender Body Oil from ADelightfulHome.com

This recipe, adapted by Stacy from ADelightfulHome.com from The Herbal Home Spa is probably the simplest body oil recipe ever and will take just a few minutes to make.

Here’s the recipe…

- 2/3 cup jojoba oil
- 1/3 cup wheat germ oil
- 6 drops lavender oil
- 10 drops vitamin E oil

Simply add all ingredients to a glass bottle, shake well and voila.

Face Moisturizing Oil

This recipe has been slightly adapted from The Complete Book Of Essential Oils & Aromatherapy. We have simply substituted rose essential oil (since it can be so expensive) for geranium essential oil.

This oil blend can be used as a day moisturizer to hydrate the skin and prevent the formation of wrinkles.

Here’s the recipe…

- Geranium oil (15 drops)
- Patchouli oil (5 drops)
- Lavender oil (5 drops)
- Lemon oil (5 drops)
- Dilute the above essential oil blend in two tablespoons of sweet almond oil.

Simply massage the oil onto dampened skin and dab with a tissue until no oil remains.
