Natural Herbs & Supplements To Turn Back The Clock

July 21, 2008

Many people like to get all their vitamins, minerals and antioxidants from food sources, but some like to boost their intake by taking various natural supplements and herbs which contain larger quantities of nutrients and plant compounds. Always consult a nutritional therapist to find out what supplements will work best for you and consult your GP if you are pregnant or on medication.

Beware of taking high doses of antioxidants. Sometimes they can act as pro-antioxidants which can damage the body and kickstart that anti-aging process, rather than slow it down. When getting vitamins, minerals and antioxidants from foods sources it’s almost impossible to overdose on them.

Improve your brainpower by taking the herb Ginkgo biloba. It has antioxidant properties and increases the elasticity of blood vessels so boosts circulation to the brain. It also helps to improve concentration and has been linked with easing depression and anxiety in older age. Take 120mg daily for optimum results.

You can keep your joints mobile into old age by taking evening primrose oil. Its constituent omega-6 essential fatty acid GLA (gamma linoleic acid) is converted into inflammation controlling prostaglandins. (Woah, lots of big words there!) Evening primrose oil also has the added advantage of keeping skin, hair and nails looking youthful. Take 1,000mg with food up to three times per day.

Calcium rich supplements are essential for reducing the risk of bone loss, energy production, metabolism and digestion. Calcium can also lower high blood pressure and keep heart and blood vessels healthy. Calcium can be found in many food sources, but can also be taken in supplement form. 1,000mg – 2,000mg is the recommended daily intake.

Maintain your youthful energy and vitality into old age by taking a supplement rich in amino acid L-carnitine. It is not available in many food sources but is important for boosting energy and endurance levels. 500mg daily is recommended.

6 Tips To A Natural Body Rejuvenation With Exercise

July 18, 2008

By training aerobically and boosting the efficiency of the cardiovascular system you are improving every part of the body function. Training with weights and strengthening muscles maintains good posture, bone density and joint mobility into old age. Here are six tips for a natural body rejuvenation through exercise.

1. Aim to exercise for at least half an hour at least five times per week. If you can, try to workout for an hour. If you can’t find time for an hour slot, then break it up into 20 minute sessions. At least two sessions per week should be resistance training, while the other three sessions should be cardio workouts, such as swimming, jogging or cycling.

2. Sometimes the enthusiasm associated with beginning a training programme causes you to launch whole-heartedly into your regime. This can cause injury and fatigue. Instead, start slowly and gradually build up the intensity at which you work.

3. Some people like to begin the day with a morning swim or a rejuvenating yoga session, others like to go for a run in the mid-afternoon and others like to exercise in the evening. Find a time that suits you best and exercise then.

4. Try to incorporate your workouts with your family and friends. Use your exercise time to spend time with your kids, friends and colleagues. Play tennis with your kids or have a game of football with your friends. This way you can socialise and workout your muscles.

5. When possible, exercise outdoors. Being outdoors gives a feeling of exhilaration, but also of peace and tranquillity. Get outside when you can. Go for a jog at dawn, a swim in the ocean, or have a yoga session in the park.

6. Workout in four stages. A gentle warm-up involving gentle jogging and stretching, aerobic or cardiovascular exercise to work the heart and lungs, strengthening exercises to work the muscles, and finally a cool down stretch.

Secrets To Looking & Feeling Younger: Dress To Impress

This is the last article in a 10 part series on how to look and feel younger naturally. This article is slightly different and focusses on what to wear to look and feel younger.

Firstly, many women get stuck in the style from many years ago. Women who looked good in their mid 20’s back in the 1980’s tend to stick with the style back then. They don;t keep up with the times. Fashion is constantly evolving, you have to keep up or get left behind and look a lot older than you truely are.

Use magazines to research the latest trends and fashions and find the latest ‘cuts’ and ’styles’. You may not be able to afford the clothes metioned in the magazines but you’ll be able to find similar clothes in stores such as Gap.

Watch what young people are wearing. Stereotypically, young people have style (most of them anyway). Observe what they wear and adapt it to your own age. Don’t dress innapropriately for your age.

Only wear clothes that fit and suit the shape and size of your body. Emphasize the good parts of your body and try to ‘hide’ the not so attractive features.

Accessorize. Accessories are a great way to add a bit of personality and style to your appearance. Keep an eye out in magazines for tips on what accessories to wear and observe other people with style on what they are wearing.

Be careful with the colours you wear. They change seasonally. The colours you wear need to match your skin colour and hair colour.

Sometimes you have to invest money in your appearance. You can’t always go for the cheap option, but get it right and it will always be money well spent. Dress well and it will sky-rocket your confidence and make you look ten years younger.

Secrets To Looking & Feeling Younger: Manage Stress

July 10, 2008

This is one article in a 10 part series on how to look and feel younger naturally. This article reveals the effects of excessive stress on our health and beauty and what we can do to elimate stress from our lives.

Did you know that the stress hormone cortisol SHRINKS the hippocampus (the part of the brain responsible for memory and thinking). Stress ages us in ways we never imagined.

As well as aging the mind, stress contributes to adding pounds of fat around the waist area. Not only is this unsightly, it is also a highly dangerous health risk.

There are many ways to manage stress, here are some of the best.

Firstly, exercise. Exercise seems to be at the top of every list to do with health and that’s because it’s so important. Just thirty minutes of exercise per day helps to clear the mind and eliminate stress, as well as give the body a great workout.

Meditation has been proved to work for many to eliminate stress. Meditation helps to clear the mind of stressful thoughts. Do some searching on the internet to find out more about meditation. Read this article for help.

Relaxation also helps. Try and get hold of a progressive muscular relaxation tape. The tape guides you through each step in relaxing every single muscle in the body. It clears the mind, too. I’ve done it once and it provides a completely surreal feeling. Give it a go.

Mechanical techniques, such as stress balls are a great way to release pent up anger. They can be bought very cheap. Keep them on hand for potentially stressful situations.

The best way however to eliminate stress is to avoid situations which cause you to become stressed. Identify your stressors and avoid them. Failing that, at least learn to manage them effectively.

Stress is a killer. Avoid it, manage it, or pay the consequences.

Secrets To Looking & Feeling Younger: Stay Active

July 9, 2008

This is one article in a 10 part series on how to look and feel younger naturally. This article reveals the importance of staying active for maintaining youth and vitality and what activities you can participate in to slow down the aging clock.

It’s important to stay active. Simply by moving around you are telling your body to maintain it’s functions. Once you stop moving around, many of your body’s functions just stop. They cease working and then comes the inevitable aging process on the inside and the outside.

So, what can we do to stay active?

Cardiovascular activity is the best way to keep our body functioning at its optimum level. Activities such as jogging, walking and cycling are great forms of exercise that aren’t too strenuous and great for our overall health. Even better is swimming which gently works all of the body’s muscles, yet still removes the strain on our bones by supporting our weight in the water. Thirty minutes of cardio activity per day keeps the body looking and feeling young.

Yoga is another great way to keep our body’s active. Yoga relaxes the body and mind and gently tones the muscles. Participating in regular yoga sessions will do wonders for your health and appearance.

Did you know that muscle encourages the production of growth hormones and other youth related hormones. That’s something to think about. Gentle gym work for building muscle will work wonders for turning back the clock, but don’t overdo it. Naturally, after middle age it’s harder to build muscle. Aging muscles lack flexibility and are more prone to strains, pulls and cramps.

As well as keeping the body active, we need to keep the mind active. Crosswords and mind games such as Sudoku keep the mind working which is essential.

To wrap this article up, here’s a quote to think about:

“You don’t stop playing because you grow old, you grow old because you stop playing.”

Secrets To Looking & Feeling Younger: Healthy Eating

July 8, 2008

This is one article in a 10 part series on how to look and feel younger naturally. This article reveals the importance of healthy eating for maintaining your health and vitality.

Food is life for humans. In recent years, the food we have consumed, instead of giving us life, has caused chronic illnesses and disease. The effects of time and age can be slowed down, and food is the best way to do this. Food is capable of nourishing our bodies, revitalising us, sky-rocketing our energy and make us look and feel younger in the process, too.

Here are some of the best foods to stay young and healthy on the inside and the outside.

Berries - strawberries, rasberries, blueberries and blackberries are stellar sources of vitamins and nutrients, as well as fibre. They are an excellent source of antioxidants, help to boost memory and are very kind to the waistline. Recently a new berry called Goji berries have been discovered and have been voted the number one fruit on the ORAC scale which measures the level of antioxidants in foods. If you can get your hands on Goji berries, then do so.

Citrus - not only do citrus fruits taste like a little drop of heaven, they also have endless health benefits for maintaining youth and vitality. Fruits such as oranges, grapefruit, kiwi, lemon, lime and tangerines can be included under this category. Citrus fruits contains falvanoids which is a phytonutrient which lowers the body’s production of cholestrol and boosts the effect on vitamin C.

Tea - there are many different types of teas, each with their own individual health benefits. All teas contain polyphenols which are powerful antioxidants that can protect against heart disease, certain cancers and stroke. Green tea is packed full of antioxidants and often known as a miracle drink because of its endless health benefits.

Other power foods include oily fish, such as salmon, nuts and seeds, lean proteins, olive oil and of course vegetables.

For optimum health you should regularly consume all of these foods. Don’t forget to include water, too, to flush the toxins out of the body.

Secrets To Looking & Feeling Younger: Remove Toxins

This is one article in a 10 part series on how to look and feel younger naturally. This article reveals how you can embark upon a detox diet to eliminate toxins and help you look and feel younger, healthier and happier.

Detox, short for detoxification, is the body’s natural, ongoing process of neutralizing or removing toxins from the body. Toxins are anything which could potentially harm the body and can enter the body through food additives, pollution, cigarette smoke and household cleaners.

There are many health benefits of a detox diet, both internal and external. A detox diet can help with weight loss and especially getting rid of the last few stubborn pounds. It also eliminates cellulite which occurs because the body is storing toxins in the fat tissues. A detox diet improves skin tone and removes blemishes, such as acne. Internally, a detox diet energises the body and rejuvenates the mind. It encourages the body to release endorphins which is known as the “happy hormone”.

So, what can we eat on a detox diet?

Firstly, FRUITS! Fruits contain almost all the good things we need from our diet. They are high in vitamin C, fibre and many antioxidants.

Secondly, VEGETABLES! Especially the green leafy type. Chlorophyll found in green vegetables is a natural chelating agent which helps remove heavy metals and pesticides from the body.

Green tea is a great drink to consume on a detox diet. It’s rich in antioxidants and is one of the healthiest ways to get fluids into the body. As well as green tea, water should be consumed regularly to maintain optimum hydration.

All food you consume on a detox diet should be free from additives and preservatives. Organic foods are best so that you aren’t adding pesticides to your body.

Gentle detoxification by nourishing your entire body will do wonders. Your body will operate at its best….something you may be missing out on.
