Health Benefits Of Pomegranate Juice

July 12, 2008

health benefits of pomegranate juice

Pomegranate juice has exploded onto the scene in recent years and has become one of the most talked about juices amongst health conscious individuals.

Just a 100 ml serving of pomegranate juice provides nearly 20% on an adult’s daily vitamin C intake. It is also a good source of potassium, fibre and antioxidant polyphenols. The main polyphenols are hydrolyzable tannins called punicalagins which are able to scavenge free radicals.

Pomegranate juice has an endless list of health benefits. Here are just some of them.

Pomegranate juice has been shown to reduce the risk of breast cancer. Studies from Israel have shown that pomegranate juice is capable of fighting breast cancer cells whilst leaving the healthy cells alone. It has also been shown to slow the growth of prostate cancer and prevent lung cancer.

Studies have also shown that pomegranate juice can prevent the deterioration of cartilage to prevent osteoarthritis, can prevent plaque from building up in the arteries and can prevent or slow Alzheimer’s disease. It has also been shown to lower blood pressure and lower LDL (bad cholestrol) and raise HDL (good cholestrol).

Pomegranate juice is a fantastic addition to anyone’s diet and a great way to add antioxidants. Make sure you have a juice that is 100% pomegranate with no sugar, no high fructose corn syrup or any other fillers.

Secrets To Looking & Feeling Younger: Healthy Eating

July 8, 2008

This is one article in a 10 part series on how to look and feel younger naturally. This article reveals the importance of healthy eating for maintaining your health and vitality.

Food is life for humans. In recent years, the food we have consumed, instead of giving us life, has caused chronic illnesses and disease. The effects of time and age can be slowed down, and food is the best way to do this. Food is capable of nourishing our bodies, revitalising us, sky-rocketing our energy and make us look and feel younger in the process, too.

Here are some of the best foods to stay young and healthy on the inside and the outside.

Berries - strawberries, rasberries, blueberries and blackberries are stellar sources of vitamins and nutrients, as well as fibre. They are an excellent source of antioxidants, help to boost memory and are very kind to the waistline. Recently a new berry called Goji berries have been discovered and have been voted the number one fruit on the ORAC scale which measures the level of antioxidants in foods. If you can get your hands on Goji berries, then do so.

Citrus - not only do citrus fruits taste like a little drop of heaven, they also have endless health benefits for maintaining youth and vitality. Fruits such as oranges, grapefruit, kiwi, lemon, lime and tangerines can be included under this category. Citrus fruits contains falvanoids which is a phytonutrient which lowers the body’s production of cholestrol and boosts the effect on vitamin C.

Tea - there are many different types of teas, each with their own individual health benefits. All teas contain polyphenols which are powerful antioxidants that can protect against heart disease, certain cancers and stroke. Green tea is packed full of antioxidants and often known as a miracle drink because of its endless health benefits.

Other power foods include oily fish, such as salmon, nuts and seeds, lean proteins, olive oil and of course vegetables.

For optimum health you should regularly consume all of these foods. Don’t forget to include water, too, to flush the toxins out of the body.

The Benefits of Eating Organic Foods

June 13, 2008

For the past several years people have become more health conscious, thus learning about the true benefits of eating organic foods. Besides the long-term health benefits of changing your eating style to include foods that are organically grown, there are also health benefits that deal directly with specific food related diseases. Since the introduction of processed foods to the Western world, the annual rate of consumers who are affected by food-borne illnesses and pathogens has risen significantly. Diseases such as e-coli and salmonella are seen much more frequently since the introduction of processed foods. These illnesses are no longer confined to meat products. Fruits and vegetables are being found with pathogens that cause serious illness in consumers. This is also true in other parts of the world. When newly processed foods are introduced, consumers begin to notice a sharp increase in the number of people who are affected by food-related illnesses.

Of course another benefit of eating organic foods is the cost ratio. Purchasing your organically grown foods locally will not only help to increase your local economy, but with the current gas and oil crisis, you can save a substantial amount of money by shopping locally and eliminating the long drives that are often associated with grocery and food shopping. Although not every small town has an organic restaurant, it is safe to assume that virtually all offer organic foods as an alternative to processed foods.

The direct health benefits of eating organic foods are many. First of all, the taste of organic foods is much better than that of processed foods. The flavor of organic fruits and vegetables is wonderful and there are much juicier than processed versions. Organic milk tastes much richer as do cheeses prepared organically. Once you have tasted the wonderful flavor of organic foods it is likely that you will never again enjoy the processed version of that food.

Another very evident benefit of eating organic foods is that organically grown and/or raised foods have not been introduced to artificial pesticides. These pesticides are one of the reasons that so many consumers become ill each year. Organic farms which produce only naturally grown foods strictly ban the use of pesticides. Although we are raised to believe that washing fruits and vegetables eliminates the pesticide that may be on them, this is not always true. There simply is no way to ensure that you are removing all traces of chemicals that are sprayed on these foods when they are not organically grown. Pesticide residue can also be found in many baby foods, on bread and many other foods. Of course there are many governments that claim that these pesticides will not harm you, but ultimately it is much better for your overall health to ensure that you are not consuming any artificial or chemical components in your food supply. Eating organic foods is the only way to ensure that your food is completely free of pesticides or other harmful chemicals.

There has been much speculation on using genetically modified foods. Many people believe that they can be harmful as well. Organic products do not contain any GM foods. Although the health risks in long-term outlooks of GM foods have not yet been verified, it is much safer to avoid these and simply stick with completely natural organic foods.

As well as being completely pure foods, organic foods contain more nutrients, vitamins, minerals and essential fatty acids than processed foods. This is in part due to the lack of processing that organic foods receive. Those foods that are processed are ridded of many of their essential vitamins and nutrients. Eating only organic foods, or those grown naturally, will ensure that you receive all the vitamins and minerals, as well as other important nutrients that you need to ensure your overall general health. Organic foods are pure. You get nothing added and nothing taken away. Organic foods contain none of the artificial colors, flavors, sweeteners or preservatives that are found in processed foods. They are also not filled with residual antibiotics, growth hormones or BSE. With none of these additives found in organic foods, as well as the lack of pesticides that virtually all processed fruits and vegetables contain, choosing to eat organic foods simply makes sense if you are looking for a healthier alternative to filling your body with chemicals.

The benefits of eating organic foods are many. Besides the extra vitamins and other essential nutrients that you are getting, it is simply a more natural way to eat, without worrying about chemicals and other additives being found in your food supply. To avoid the risk of adding things to your body that you do not want, to avoid risky food-borne illnesses that are evident in many areas that consume large amounts of processed foods and to simply enjoy a healthier and more natural lifestyle, organic foods are an excellent choice.

Can “Honey” Really Do That?

The word “honey” comes from the ancient Hebrew meaning “enchant”. Though honey is thought of mainly as a sweetener that would be selling those “Busy Little Bee’s” short for all their work. So, here’s a little buzz on that familiar sweet and sticky household item.

Below are some common problems which can easily be prevented from the use of honey:

Hay Fever Help

Honey contains grains of pollen and as an immune system booster, it is quite powerful. It also, may create a desensitizing effect for those that are burden with allergies. So, if you happen to be bugged by hay fever, be sure to eat honey that is harvested locally. When I’m asked how local should the honey be for allergy prevention I always advise to get honey that was raised closest to where you live, the closer the better, since it will have more of exactly what you’ll need.

Additionally, honey helps to restore our energy and helps dissolve that irritating mucus. Honeybees will collect pollen from local species, such as in California where we have Bottlebrush trees, and it will be present in small amounts in honey that was gathered by bees that were working areas where these species are growing. When people living in these same areas eat honey that was produced in that environment, the honey will often act as an immune booster. The good effects of this local honey are best when the honey is taken a little bit (a couple of teaspoons-full) a day for several months prior to the pollen season.

First Aid Friend

Applied directly to the skin for minor cuts and scrapes, not to mention applying it to chapped lips. Honey can disinfect the wounds and reduce the swelling of the area too.

Kick Back and Relax

Feeling uptight from a long hard day? Put 2 oz. of honey in a glass with 5 to 10 drops of lavender oil. Place the glass in warm water. To thin out the mixture add 2 tablespoons of the aromatic honey-lavender mix to your bathwater to help you relax and to help with insomnia. Are you having a little afternoon fatigue at 3pm, drink 1/2 Tablespoon of honey in a glass of water and sprinkle with cinnamon powder. Energy will increase within one week if taken daily. Add a little honey to your sleepy time tea to create an overall calming effect.

Can’t Sleep

Also can help you sleep at night. For insomnia, take 1 Tablespoon of honey at dinner. If that doesn’t work, try mixing 3 Tablespoons of Apple Cider Vinegar to 1 cup of honey in a jar. Take 2 teaspoons before bed. If you don’t fall asleep within the hour, take 2 teaspoons more. An old ayuverdic remedy has men taking the same dosage (2 Tablespoons of honey) before bed to treat impotence. Honey for pain relief, Mix 3 Tbls. of honey in boiled water and drink. Honey has natural pain-relieving powers.

Cholesterol is said to be treatable with honey

Mix two tablespoons of honey and three tablespoons of cinnamon in 16 ounces of tea. This mixture is said to reduce the level of cholesterol by ten percent within a short amount of time. As with arthritis, it is said that pure honey taken with food daily will reduce cholesterol levels. Along the same lines, using cinnamon and honey on bread and eaten at breakfast revitalized the arteries and veins leading to the heart and helpful towards preventing heart attacks.

Arthritis is one disease that may be cured with honey

One part honey to two parts of lukewarm water and a teaspoon of cinnamon will make a paste that will noticeably reduce pain in a matter of a couple of minutes. Patients suffering from arthritis can take one cup of hot water with two spoons of honey and a teaspoon of cinnamon once in the morning and again in the evening. It’s been said that taken regularly even chronic arthritis can be cured. Copenhagen University tested their theory by giving patients a mixture of one tablespoon of hone and one half teaspoon of cinnamon before breakfast.

Minerals: Calcium

April 13, 2008

Most people know that calcium is essential to building strong bones and teeth. What they don’t know is that there is more calcium inside our body than any other mineral, and that almost all of it within us is in the teeth and bone areas.

There are many things about calcium that most people don’t know though. Calcium is a natural tranquilizer that will help you sleep for instance, and this is why some people drink warm milk before bed.

Calcium also helps the metabolism work properly though, and it is essential to the muscles functioning properly in your body too. In fact, getting extra calcium will help relieve muscle cramps and charlie horses.

Calcium needs to have enough vitamin D in the body to be absorbed and used though, and calcium is absorbed less as you get older.

Calcium loss is slowed down by exercise though, which is why people with osteoperosis and other bone related diseases are told to get more exercise.

Emotional stress can actually cause your body to lose calcium quickly though, because the stress simply flushes it out of your system.

Calcium is actually an excellent pain killer too though. It has been used in conjunction with Vitamin D to relieve dental pain for instance, and it’s been used in injection form for treating pleurisy.

Calcium will help relieve headaches, muscle pains, and menstrual cramps too. It also helps relieve stress, and it helps you sleep at night too so it’s excellent to use for insomnia.

Calcium also helps lower cholesterol and triglyceride levels, regulates the heart beat, and helps the body’s proper blood clotting functions.

If that weren’t enough, calcium also helps the body aborb and use Iron, it helps the functionality of Vitamin C, it helps prevent skin problems, and it can help reduce some of the signs of aging.

If your body doesn’t get enough Calcium, or it’s not being utilized properly, some of the signs can include insomnia, poor growth, growing pains, teeth and gum problems, weak muscles, painful joints and arthritis, and muscle cramps.

You can get calcium into your body naturally by eating foods such as cheese, soybeans, sardines and salmon, peanuts and walnuts, sunflower seeds, green vegetables, and various milk products.

There are also herbs which are high in calcium naturally, and these can be taken as a daily supplement if needed. Some of the best herbs for calcium include Alfalfa, Black Walnut, Capsicum (Cayenne), Camomile, Dandelion, Fennel, Garlic, Ginger, Kelp, Parsley, Rosemary, and Sage.

An Introduction To Minerals & Their Health Benefits

April 11, 2008

Minerals are very much like vitamins: They are essential for the proper functioning and health of the human body. Vitamins need to be replaced regularly though, where as minerals stay in our body and make up the actual structure of the body too.

Minerals “turn over” though, meaning a little of them must be replaced or renewed continuously in order for us to stay healthy.

Minerals are essential for our bodies to activate, assimilate, and use vitamins properly though. Minerals are absorbed by plants through the soil, and animals and humans get the minerals from those plants. There are many essential minerals we know about, can identify, and know what their importance is. There are also trace minerals though, which are found in plant life too, and these are also needed by our bodies even though scientists don’t have much information on them yet.

In most cases, vitamins and minerals work together within our body. Calcium and Vitamin D are excellent examples, because the body needs enough Vitamin D to be able to absorb and use calcium.

Chelated (key lated) minerals are required for our bodies to be able to use them. Chelation happens when a mineral is wrapped in molecules of protein, and chelation is needed in order for the blood stream to accept the minerals. If a mineral is not chelated, then both it and the vitamins associated with it will pass through the body without providing any benefit.

This is one of the reasons it’s usually suggested that you take a vitamin or mineral with a meal. Because the proteins from your meal will help your body chelate the minerals and absorb and use them properly, along with the vitamins too.

Before the body can chelate a mineral though, it must dissolve it first. Once it has dissolvedĀ  the mineral, it then uses protein to chelate it for proper use. Now, if you don’t eat enough protein of course, you’re going to have a problem utilizing both minerals and vitamins in your body. And if you take vitamin supplements, they may be in a form which is difficult for your body to dissolve properly, which of course would make them unusuable as well.

These are reasons to use natural herbal supplements for adding vitamin and mineral content. Herbal sources contain high amounts of both vitmains and minerals, including the trace minerals too. Herbal supplements are often purchased in crushed or powdered form too, so these are much easier for the body to readily dissolve and put to use within us.

Top 10 Foods That Help You Lose Weight

April 5, 2008

The foods you consume have an undeniable effect on how you look, how you feel and most importantly how much you weigh. Certain foods are especially helpful with helping you to lose weight and after thorough research and discussion with nutritionists, RevitaliseYourHealth.com has compiled this list of the top 10 foods that you should eat to help you lose weight.

1) Apples

Apples contain pectin. Pectin is a soluble fibre that breaks down slowly, helping you to feel fuller for longer. A study performed in the late 1990’s revealed that just 5g of pectin is enough to help you feel full for up to four hours. Just two reasonably sized apples provided over two thirds of this amount.

2) Grapes

Grapes are a very sweet, tasty snack that should be used as a substitute for those biscuits you may otherwise be eating. 100g of grapes contain just 70 calories. Grapes are a fantastic detoxification fruit. They help to cleanse the system which aids with weight loss.

3) Burdock Root

Burdock is a root vegetable that contains inulin. Inulin is a carbohydrate that regulates blood sugar levels and is able to control hunger and reduce cravings. Burdock root also heps to improve fat metabolism and act as a diuretic (an agent that helps the kidneys to pass urine more often).

4) High fiber cereals

Research has shown that those who eat high fibre cereals in the morning for breakfast traditionally eat less at lunch time. Cereals contain insoluble fibre. Insoluble fibre provides volume to food without adding too many calories. For best results, try to eat cereals that contain over 6g of fibre per serving.

5) Bladder Wrack Kelp

Technically a herb, but this should still be considered. Kelp is a variety of seaweed and it can be taken as pills, tinctures or dried. Research has shown that it is capable of strengthening the thyroid which can help to boost metabolism and aid weight loss. It also works by feeding the body with easily absorbed important nutrients on a cellular level. This reduces hunger and prevents cravings. Bladder wrack kelp can be taken as a snack between meals and can be used as a salt substitute.

6) Barley

Barley is a low fat complex carbohydrate which increases your metabolism - the rate at which your body burns calories. One cup of barley contains 6g of fibre. 25g is the recommended daily allowance.

7) Sugarless Gum

I don’t know if this can technically be classified as a food, but none the less sugarless gum is a fantastic way to quench cravings, contrary to popular belief. Gum is a great way to give your taste buds a burst of flavour and prevent yourslef from consuming a sweet, caloric snack.

8) Water

This definitley can’t be considered a food, but still, water is vitally important if you’re attempting to lose weight. Research has shown that people often mistake thirst for hunger, and thus end up eating when they should be drinking. Water contains zero calories so does not contribute to weight gain, and has plenty of other health benefits which I’m sure you are aware of. Many dislike the taste of plain water - I’m one of them. To add a bit of flavour I squeeze a little lemon.

9) Dairy products

Dairy products contain a number of important nutrients, most famously calcium. Calcium is not only capable of keeping the bones strong and healthy, it’s also a proven aid in the weight loss process. Researchers have found that in a study of eight normal weight women who each had 1000mg of calcium every day managed to lose approximately 6lbs over the course of two years. 1000mg of calcium is equivalent to around one and a half pints of milk per day.

10) Chocolate

I thought it would be good to end this list on a high and what better way than with chocolate! By indulging yourself with a bar of chocolate once in a while it prevents massive binges which can lead to massive weight gain. Chocolate (especially dark chocolate) contains other health benefits, including a high concentration of antioxidants which help to fight free radicals. In moderation, there is no harm in the occassional bar of chocolate.

This article has revealed ten of the best foods that aid weight loss. They are not magic pills, they need to be incorporated into a balanced diet with regular exercise. Then, and only then, will you start to notice significant weight loss.

Super Food Alert: Bee Pollen

February 22, 2008

Foods that naturally concentrate important nutrients are considered super foods. Taken alone, super foods are much better (than single vitamin supplements) because they are balanced. Bee Pollen is a very natural and safe super food you can start taking in raw unprocessed honey mixed with cereal or spread on toast. That sounds delicious, but if you prefer, you can also take 500 to 1,000 mg of bee pollen in capsule or tablet form.

Famous athletes take it for strength and endurance. According to Sally Fallon, author of Nourishing Traditions, bee pollen contains 22 amino acids including high amounts of the eight essential ones, 27 minerals, and the full gamut of vitamins, hormones, carbohydrates, and fatty acids. Wow! Fallon also states that bee pollen has been used to treat asthma, menstrual irregularities, constipation, anemia, cancer, arthritis, and rheumatism.

There is a province in Russia where people commonly live to be 100. When the area of Georgia was studied, it was found that the centenarians ate unprocessed, raw honey daily. Guess the secrets out and we can be just as lucky as they are if we bother to take care of ourselves and take this super food daily. Don’t you think that’s a simple solution?

Bee pollen will give you more stamina. If you workout, you will recover quickly. So, go get your energy boost.

Bee pollen can also do wonders for you if you suffer from re-occuring colds and respiratory tract infections. It helps strengthen your immune system so it’s a great idea to take it during times of stress or exposure to colds.

Another benefit of this super food is that it helps you eliminate allergies, a common complaint nowadays. The pollen has a desensitizing effect on your immune system. It works like allergy shots do in that it exposes your body to pollen in small amounts and this ends up helping your body tolerate it.

Important Note: Do not use bee pollen if you are allergic to bee stings.
