Lavender oil is probably the most popular and widely used essential oil on the market today. It is commonly known for its soothing aromatherapy applications. However, lavender is also extremely effective in the prevention of hair loss, promotion of new hair growth and the improvement of overall hair health.

Alopecia areata is a condition that causes the excessive loss of hair. Generally the hair loss through alopecia is patchy. Lavender oil is a natural enemy of this condition preventing the disease from destroying the hair while nurturing and protecting existing hair follicles and encouraging new follicles to grow.

Hair loss can also be caused by many common issues such as anxiety, stress and depression, all of which can lead to insomnia and interrupt the normal healing process that takes place at a cellular level while we sleep. Lavender is well known for its relaxing effects. A daily scalp massage with the oil not only soothes dry, itchy skin but calms the mind and body to lull you into a deep sleep. Sufficient rest provides another stronghold against hair loss.

Being a strong antiseptic, lavender disinfects the scalp. Not only can it treat dry skin and other scalp conditions, but fights fungi, bacteria and other harmful organisms as well for overall clean and healthy skin.

As well as being good for the hair, lavender is good for the rest of the body and mind. Its calming scent is therapeutic for many nervous disorders and helps relieve pain from sore muscles, sprains, migraines and rheumatism among other conditions. Lavender stimulates urine production and helps to store a hormonal balance in the system. It can also reduce cystitis and other inflammation.

Many respiratory disorders are widely treated with lavender including asthma, laryngitis, and cold or flu symptoms. It can be applied topically on the skin or added to vaporizers and inhalers. Once again, the relaxing scent aids in restful sleep which further helps heal from disease or injury.

Lavender is antifungal and antiseptic making it an effective oil for skin and has many uses to treat wounds or skin disorders such as eczema. Use of the oil helps to boost the immune system and provides additional resistance to disease. Additional benefits include improved circulation and lower blood pressure as well as aiding in digestion.

Despite lavender’s numerous health benefits, it has been shown to be cytotoxic and photosensitizing and should not be used by women who are pregnant and nursing. People with allergies or skin sensitivities should consult their doctor before using lavender oil.

If you want to try using lavender oil for your hair, then I personally recommend Now Foods Lavender Oil. However, if you’d like to experience the benefits of lavender oil with a ready made lavender oil enriched shampoo, then try this Suave Naturals Soothing Lavender Shampoo.
