Detox, short for detoxification, is the body’s natural, ongoing process of neutralizing or removing toxins from the body. Toxins are anything which could potentially harm the body and can enter the body through food additives, pollution, cigarette smoke and household cleaners.

There are many health benefits of a detox diet, both internal and external. A detox diet can help with weight loss and especially getting rid of the last few stubborn pounds. It also eliminates cellulite which occurs because the body is storing toxins in the fat tissues. A detox diet improves skin tone and removes blemishes, such as acne. Internally, a detox diet energises the body and rejuvenates the mind. It encourages the body to release endorphins which is known as the “happy hormone”.

So, what can we eat on a detox diet?

Firstly, FRUITS! Fruits contain almost all the good things we need from our diet. They are high in vitamin C, fibre and many antioxidants.

Secondly, VEGETABLES! Especially the green leafy type. Chlorophyll found in green vegetables is a natural chelating agent which helps remove heavy metals and pesticides from the body.

Green tea is a great drink to consume on a detox diet. It’s rich in antioxidants and is one of the healthiest ways to get fluids into the body. As well as green tea, water should be consumed regularly to maintain optimum hydration.

All food you consume on a detox diet should be free from additives and preservatives. Organic foods are best so that you aren’t adding pesticides to your body.
