“The Brain Chemistry Diet & How It Saved My Life”

To begin this review, I would like to share a small back story about my experience with this book.

I started becoming ill around age 19. It started with extreme fatigue, lack of concentration, stomach problems and strange aches and pains in my body. When my conditions became severe enough to hinder my ability to function normally, I started seeking medical help.

For the next 10 years, I was told it was stress, hypochondria, depression or my imagination. By this time my symptoms had accelerated to extreme fatigue and chronic pain, chest pain and difficulty breathing, panic attacks, insomnia, intense stomach discomfort and debilitating muscle weakness. I had become bedridden for all practical purposes.

Finally I had something of a breakthrough. I went to a new doctor who had just been to a seminar about auto-immune system disorders. His diagnosis was an onslaught of these conditions. Basically, my body was waging an all out war on itself. My immune system could no longer tell the difference between healthy cells and foreign cells so it began attacking my protein cells, killing off my muscles. As a result, none of my biological systems were working properly. I was completely miserable. He started me on a very long list of medications from anti-depressants to steroids which, unfortunately, didn’t do much but add side effects to my already growing list of symptoms.

Then one day my mother sent me a book called “The Brain Chemistry Diet: The Personalized Prescription for Balancing Mood, Relieving Stress, and Conquering Depression, Based on Your Personality Profile” by Michael Lesser MD.

She sent me the book because she’d heard it helped with bi-polar disorder (yes, I had that as well) and thought it might help. When I first started reading the book, I thought it was a joke. My first task was to complete a personality quiz. It seemed like something you’d find in a women’s magazine, but I was desperate so I gave it a shot.

When I read the results, I was stunned. His description of what happens with my personality (or brain) type when it is out of balance was like reading my own autobiography. It was accurate all the way down to how I deal with interpersonal relationships. Doctors had told me that my conditions were caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain, but none of them told me why I had an imbalance.

After reading this book and doing further research, I found that the chemical imbalance was caused by poor nutrition. Just look at how many Americans are currently taking medication for something these days. We are all on the Standard American Diet (S.A.D.-appropriately named) and are effectively starving our brains.

Bear in mind that by the time I received this book, I was now completely bedridden and had been told that I would likely be in a wheelchair for the rest of my life.

As a last ditch effort, I starting following Dr. Lesser’s suggestions from the book. Within 3 days I was able to walk. Over the next 3 weeks, I was back to normal activity and within a year, I had lost 35lbs and was walking 5 miles a day in addition to a daily workout.

I can’t recommend this book enough. Dr. Lesser has treated patients with everything from mood disorders to chronic disease with his methods.

I firmly believe that his book saved my life.
